Problems with wiring
July 20, 2006
Well, the car has one major wiring issue that it's always had. And that would be, well...for reasons which don't need to be mentioned, the wiring harness was cut in my car. And not neatly either...the harness is beyond repair really, with wires colors missing all over and parts of the harness missing the pins at the bottom which complete the connection.
For the longest time, I either haven't attempted to repair the problem, or just couldn't find a way to do so. Finding a harness to replace this one didn't happen - apparently Ford no longer produces the harness.
Likely because it's a special kind - a digital EATC heating harness for a 2002 Ford Taurus SEL. There's lots of SELs out there, but the part is no longer produced.
This presents a particular problem, because I can no longer buy the part new. And trying to find a part at the scrapyard; well I haven't found one yet and I've tried quite a few.
Why is it harder to find? Because the SELs have digital display readout systems, while most of the other Fords have analog displays. The digital display is only in the 2000 and up models, and only the luxury editions.
Why, oh why did I ever think I could convert a digital display to an aftermarket analog system, I will never know. The harness has been disconnected and just sitting like that for a while now; I tried to re-sauder the connections at one point but that failed as well.
I had almost gave up hope when, after posting the issue on a popular forum, a few wiring experts gave me some ideas. At this point I'm likely just going to cut both the connectors, map the pinouts, and saulder all the wires together. It should likely restore the system; all I need now is the aftermarket knobs for the dashboard and I think I'll finally be able to solve the problem.
Here is that particular post which was very, very helpful.
Thanks to all the guys at MP3car.com for their help. I am hoping once I fix the wiring issues, I will be able to solve a couple other problems like the rear turn signal not working, which I believe is also linked to the wiring harness being cut causing a short in the system.
