Custom subwoofer box building
Yes, we build boxes too!
Please check out our box building affiliate at Nick's speaker boxes.
Most audio consumers these days build their own boxes. But not all of us want to build our own box - or have the skills to do it. Having a nice box design not only makes a difference in how people view your ride - but how it sounds, too. Building a shoddy box for your subwoofers will make the difference between a clear sounding system and a rattling over-emphasis of bass.
We realize you can buy boxes for most common configurations like a couple of tens or a couple of twelves, or one of each. But once you start to go higher, like 15s, or more then two speakers, you will find that the only way to enclose your system is to build your own box or to have someone build it for you.
Box building is usually time-consuming and costly, and most places that do it (and there are few in this area) will charge you at least $500 for a custom box. An appealing painted box with a brand logo that flows with your car will cost you a grand.
Since the name of the game in our business is to do things at discount, we will try to build you a box for cheaper should you need one. Below are the construction types standard in the industry
Fiberglass construction
Fiberglass looks clean and sounds clean too. It is the most popular in the industry; has clear advantages over a solid wood (such as MDF wood) construction and looks fabulous after being painted. These boxes range from at least $300 and up as they take longer to build, require detail tools and expensive material.
Basic wood construction
Construction of basic wood is simple and takes a matter of hours. However, it is crude and most MDF constructions are considered "BEASTS" as they're heavy and look awkward. They're cheaper of course, MDF wood is a cheap material and can be bought at most hardware stores; and can be altered with simple wood tools. If you're on a budget and don't care for a "beautiful" box, go with one of these constructions. Boxes range from $200 and up. (Some budget deals may be even cheaper).
Box building design notes
Most subwoofers are different in how much space they require for optimal sound performance. Manufacturer websites for boxes or of the subwoofers will tell how much space (or db/square inch) are required to reach this peak speaker performance.
Also, while wood boxes are built to just fit into your trunk and not always maintain this peak space issue - fiberglass boxes are built to fit right into the space your spare wheel encompasses. So - advantage to wood is you can keep your spare tire (although the box would be on top) and advantage to fiberglass - it's built especially custom so your speaker(s) will sound better. But with fiberglass, your spare tire is no longer a spare. Unless you put it into your back seat, but then where will the girls sit?
